Glock 21r Real - Of all the .45 auto semi-automatic pistol options, the Glock certainly holds a prestigious position. Glock is known for its reliability and simple design - important factors for many shooters. The Glock was able to mediate between those who wanted a large amount of ammunition in a pistol and those who were tired of carrying only 6 or 7 rounds in a magazine. This brings us to the firearm we are looking at for this review, the Glock 21.
Glock introduced the G21 SF (Short Frame) in 2007 to compete for the DOD contract. The deal ultimately didn't get off the ground, but the weapon gained traction with law enforcement and civilians alike because of its unique features. Based on the Generation 3 Glock 21, the company has made only a few changes for this variant. We fired and operated the Glock 21 SF for this Glock 21 review.
Glock 21r Real
Of the changes seen on the Glock 21 SF, the most notable (as the name claims) is a smaller frame. Not to be confused with the width of the frame, the shorter frame offers less frame depth than the Gen 3 version of the Glock 21. This short frame depth allows those with small hands to have a good grip and reach. In the newer generations (Gen 4), the Glock 21 grip length is roughly the same as the G21 SF.

As mentioned earlier, the Glock 21 SF is chambered in a "big boy" caliber - .45 ACP. Most shooters know the 45 ACP as a classic caliber and many self-defense enthusiasts still rely on the cartridge today.
Glock combines tradition with capability in the Glock 21 SF. The Glock 21 SF offers a capacity of 13 + 1 - a reasonable number given the frame size.
Another unique aspect of the Glock 21 SF is the inclusion of a wide magazine release. While this feature is useful, I found it lacking in functionality. I will review it in more detail. A select few of the Glock 21 SF frames are designed with a Picatinny-style rail for accessory mounting - there aren't many of them yet and holster compatibility is a concern.
Many variants of the Glock 21 SF available today come from police departments that have retired them. These merchandise can be found in some places for as low as $350-400 - no doubt a lot.
Glock 21 Gen 4 Plum Pistol
When I first got my hands on the G21, I quickly felt at home in my hands. I don't know if everyone prefers or even enjoys the Glock experience, but as someone who owns and fires Glocks, it felt comfortable to me. Some might even argue that the Glock is an "acquired" taste - regardless of whether you like the Glock's ergonomics, the 21 SF will feel good.
Although it is designed for use by people with different hand sizes, the frame still feels quite sturdy. I shoot a Glock 17 a lot and this frame offers a better grip than the 17. While I'm not against the feel or size of the frame, I did have some issues with accessing the magazine issue. I'll get to it more later when I get into performance.
My expectations of how this gun would handle and operate in general were misplaced. Based on the quality, I expected a little more effort with these follow-up shots. However, I was pleasantly surprised. This gun has handled really well in my experience. The gun ejected any type of ammunition I added without issue. I was really impressed with the recall management.

While the frame was comfortable, I found myself wishing it had more textured surfaces. Especially after shooting or sweating for a while, the G21 SF started to fade. The slide on the 21 SF felt like there was no serration on the front and seemed difficult to grip consistently. Some frame stapling and shift serrations would be a nice aftermarket addition.
Gun Review: Glock 21 Gen 3
Shooting with the G21 SF instilled a lot of confidence - confidence grew when I realized that quick and accurate follow-through was much more possible. I did several exercises using a C-Zone steel plate about 50 feet forward and sideways. The consistent hit and controllability that I experienced with the Glock 21 made this gun a lot of fun to shoot.
Glocks aren't really known for large factory locations or trucks. They get the job done and usually nothing spectacular. My experience with the G21 SF matches pretty much every other Glock I've fired in this series.
The standard white "U" shaped rear sight with standard post front is found here on the G21 SF. I was able to get to these sites pretty confidently, but again, I've used these places before. If you buy one of these G21 SF (usually in a police trade), be prepared to change sights for low light use. I know it comes down to preference, but the fiberglass front seems to work well for me along with the black aftermarket options.
My testing of the G21 SF trigger showed an average weight of 5.5 pounds using a lemon trigger scale – pretty typical of a Glock trigger. I know many are really against these moves. I have fired enough golock pistols at this point not to worry too much.

In particular, the trigger felt smoother than a typical Glock trigger. It may very well be due to his age and years of "stealing". However, I appreciated the smooth shots and crisp breaks. No real complaints from me here.
For the most part, the gun is simple and straightforward. It is a Glock after all. I have yet to notice a few things about the performance that proved quite disturbing - the ambidextrous magazine release was the first. I feel Glock compromised on performance here to meet DOD contract requirements.
The design of the magazine issue allowed for a much smaller footprint than your typical Glock magazine issue. In the end I actually had to break the grip and access this release to rotate the frame. My hands are on the medium side of size. I was a little shocked as I tried to get the right angle to make the changes in the magazine.
The slide release also seemed to tire me a bit. While the design seems to line up with a typical Glock slide release, it doesn't seem to work as one. It took unusual and accurate pressure to get the slide release to move. I manually cocked the slide for most of my shooting.
My Custom Glock 21
It might not be a deal breaker (and I know there are aftermarket slide release options), but I felt it was worth mentioning.
As part of my range tests with the Glock 21 SF I used a Labrador Doppler radar to obtain ballistic data. Spear Gold Dot with 230 Gr. Ammunition, I fired 5 rounds while the Labrador was moving.
The average velocity for this test from the G21 SF was 832 feet per second. Spear claims a muzzle velocity of 890 feet per second. Here's a closer look at the performance of the ammunition I recorded with the Glock 21.
The Glock 21 SF is clearly a tried and tested weapon that has served for years. With Glock and aftermarket accessories readily available, it's hard to go wrong with a weapon like this. Considering the price tag and the ability to find widely used variants in good condition, the price seems high.
